In a bid to advance PWD inclusion in sports, MILO Philippines, in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) staged the third edition of the MILO Marathon Walk, Run and Roll at the UP Diliman Parking Grounds, July 26.
Powered by RUNRIO, the event pushed the cause of diversity and accessibility by bringing together national athletes, national para squads, PWDs, and advocates across the 10K, 5K, and 3K distances, plus a special 1K category exclusive for PWD participants.
Organizers ensured the route carried the same spirit of inclusion.
“The route itself, pinag-isipan talaga na malawak ang roads. Safety was a main concern. Hindi pwede ‘yung may areas na pwede sila matapilok. The water stations, from 2.5 kms intervals ginawa namin 1.5 kms. And there is no cutoff time — just finish and enjoy the race,” said PSC Commissioner Walter Torres at the PSA Forum Presser.
For their effort, participants walked away with an event pack featuring race singlets, drawstring bags, and a finisher’s medal.
Last year’s edition ventured outside Metro Manila for the first time, setting up in Surigao and drawing 3,000 entrants.
Returning to UP Diliman this year, the marathon drew thousands once again, reinforcing its place as one of the country’s largest sports initiatives promoting accessibility and inclusion.
With another successful staging in the books, organizers hope the event will inspire greater participation of persons with disabilities in mainstream sporting events nationwide.
