MISLEADING: Mobile phone usage banned from schools

In April 2026, the Department of Education (DepEd) strictly implemented a new policy: DepEd Order No. 6, S. 2026, which is titled the “Guidelines on Ensuring a Safe and Motivating Learning Environment” (ESMLE). 

One of the order’s objectives aims to prohibit the use of mobile phones during class hours. DepEd also encourages school personnel to confiscate learners’ phones before classes and return them after.

This may confuse many, prompting the question: “What happens when there’s a call for emergency?”

CLAIM: 

Due to the strict implementation of DepEd’s order, many are led to believe that mobile phones are entirely prohibited from school. 

RATING: MISLEADING

CONCLUSION: 

DepEd Central Visayas Director Arturo Bayacot clarifies that the order regulates mobile phone usage instead of completely prohibiting them.

THE FACTS: 

• DepEd stated, “The use of gadgets is only permitted for educational purposes or in times of emergency, in accordance with DepEd Order No. 006, s. 2026 or the Guidelines on Ensuring Safe and Motivating Learning Environment.”
• Schools may enforce the policy using various measures, such as collecting students’ phones before classes. However, they are given the flexibility to establish rules for implementing the order.

THE BOTTOMLINE:

Amid the strict implementation of DepEd no. 6, s. 2026, which regulates mobile phone use in schools, many believe that cellphones cannot be on school premises. However, DepEd officials clarify that the order doesn’t totally prohibit the use of cellphones. Instead, it regulates their usage to promote responsibility and independent learning.
