DepEd-Khan Academy pact drives learning recovery in 2,700 schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) and Khan Academy Philippines’ learning recovery program partnership has expanded, reaching 2,700 public schools nationwide through digital innovation since its launch in 2024.

The initiative has benefited about 711,000 learners and 12,153 teachers, providing a free digital learning platform for students and training for public school educators.

The program includes access to a free edtech platform with curriculum-aligned interactive courses and personalized learning, including the Khanmigo AI tutor, to promote quality education for all.

“Noong nagsimula kami sa Khan Academy Philippines, nasa iilang dosenang paaralan pa lamang ito. Ngayon, libo-libong paaralan na ang sinusuportahan nito sa buong bansa, na may libreng tools at libreng training para sa mga guro, nang walang dagdag na gastos sa pamahalaan,” said Education Secretary Sonny Angara in a press release, highlighting that the program began with only 30 schools in 2024.

The partner’s mastery-based system allows students to learn at their own pace, facilitating remediation, enrichment, and independent learning during and after class.

Angara also noted that this reduces the burden on schools and makes the implementation of learning recovery on a wider scale easier.

This innovation also provides teachers with real-time data on student progress, which helps them quickly identify learning gaps and adjust instruction without increasing administrative work or resource demands.

DepEd also emphasized that the partnership strengthens teachers’ capacities through nationwide onboarding and training, which equips them with classroom-ready digital tools aligned with the department’s curriculum and learning priorities.

“Tayo ’yung unang recipient sa buong mundo. Libre nilang binigay sa ating mga guro. So I hope our teachers here, our principals here will have the same zeal, same excitement, the same determination to get these tools out to our learners in the field,” he added.

The department has also recognized the leaders of Khan Academy Philippines as DepEd Heroes, including President and Chief Executive Officer Geraldine Acuña-Sunshine, Chief Operating Officer and Trustee Myrish Cadapan-Antonio, and Executive Director Denise N. Fabella.

Acuña-Sunshine stressed that quality education should not be reserved only for the elite or those who can afford it.

“We receive this honor with incredible affection and deep gratitude for allowing us to join you in serving the Filipino people, ensuring that every Filipino child has access to basic literacy and numeracy, while also providing advanced subjects for learners who are ready to go to the next level of academic achievement,” she added.

Khan Academy Philippines is among the first partners of DepEd under Secretary Angara’s leadership since 2024.
