The Philippine Lawn Tennis Association (Philta), represented by secretary general and Navotas Mayor John Rey Tiangco, met with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) on September 29 to discuss the country’s possible hosting of a WTA tournament, the group announced on Oct. 1.
During the meeting, they highlighted the WTA 125 Philippine Women’s Open, which they are aiming to hold from January 26 to February 1 next year.
“Our partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission paves the way for a new chapter in Philippine tennis,” Tiangco said in an interview with ABS-CBN.
“Tennis transforms lives, and with PSC’s support, we are determined to help Filipinos rise and shine on the world stage,” the Philta secretary general added.
If the tournament was realized, Filipino fans will have the opportunity to witness our very own tennis star, Alex Eala, defending home ground against other world-class talents.
Aside from the possible hosting of the WTA 125, the Philippines will also host the International Tennis Federation (ITF) J30 Tournament, scheduled from late November to December 7.
