Filipino scientists from the University of the Philippines (UP) and Silliman University (SU) have successfully mapped the first-ever draft genome of the endangered Visayan spotted deer (Rusa alfredi), marking a major breakthrough in Philippine conservation science.
Also called the Philippine spotted deer, this rare animal is found only in the Visayan Islands. It has been endangered since 1988, with only about 700 mature deer left in the wild as of 2016 due to habitat loss and hunting.
To better protect the species, researchers created its first genetic map, which works like an instruction manual for how the animal grows, survives, and adapts. This map, called RusAlf_1.1, includes over 24,000 genes and most of the deer’s DNA.
By comparing its DNA with other deer, scientists discovered that it is closely related to well-known species like the red deer. These findings help experts better understand its history and unique traits.
This milestone is the first time an endangered endemic Philippine species has been fully sequenced locally, showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in genomics research.
Scientists say the genome will play a crucial role in conservation efforts. It can help identify important genetic traits, monitor inbreeding, and guide breeding programs to strengthen the species’ survival—especially in captive populations maintained for future reintroduction into the wild.
With this new knowledge, researchers hope to give the Visayan spotted deer a stronger chance of survival, and protect one of the Philippines’ most unique animals from extinction.
